How you can license data before a sale

You can monetize your operational data without selling the business by granting a license to an AI lab. If you have at least 30 full-time employees, you are likely a fit for our program.

Why consider a data license before a sale?

A data license adds a revenue stream that does not dilute your equity. You keep the data, you keep using it, and you receive a one-time payment that strengthens your balance sheet. Buyers are typically large AI labs that need real-world work records to train models or to build reinforcement-learning environments. Because the data lives inside the trained model, the original files never have to be returned, which makes a perpetual use right feasible.

What data creates value?

AI labs look for the complete chain from request to outcome. The most valuable records include:

  • Support tickets together with the final resolution.
  • Chat threads where a decision was reached.
  • CRM entries and sales activity that show the full sales funnel.
  • Standard operating procedures, internal documentation, and knowledge-base articles.
  • QA logs, project histories, and accounting exports that illustrate real business workflows.

An email archive on its own usually falls short of expectations because it lacks the context of a decision or result. The price you can command depends on three things: how much data you generate, how many years of continuous history you have on the same tools, and how clean the rights are. A niche industry can also add a premium.

Typical deal size and pricing factors

Approved deals generally fall between $100,000 and $2 million USD. Buyers who give a range often cite $200,000 to $300,000 USD as a typical amount. The final figure is driven by several factors:

  • Volume of data, larger companies usually generate more records, which can raise the price.
  • Data type, operational logs and decision-making chains are premium.
  • Years of uninterrupted history, long-standing datasets carry extra value.
  • Industry rarity, a niche sector can command a higher fee.
  • Clean rights, clear ownership and the ability to de-identify personal information smooth the transaction.
Factor Effect on price
High data volume (many terabytes) Increases
Long history (5+ years on same tools) Increases
Rare industry (e.g., aerospace parts) Increases
Clean rights, easy de-identification Increases
Simple email archive only Decreases

How the licensing process works with us

First, you answer a few basic questions about company size, data types, and tools; no data moves at this stage. We then prepare a one-page summary that contains only your answers and share it with several interested AI labs. Once the labs review the summary, we bring back the best offers together with the buyers' conditions, and you choose the one that fits your needs. We work through the terms with you, and you make the final call; no contract is signed and no data leaves your environment until you agree.

After terms are set, the data is exported in a protected environment, de-identified, and any personally identifiable information or confidential items are removed. Names become stable pseudonyms such as "employee 632". The method of de-identification and the handling of raw files are spelled out in the contract, and you review a sample before anything is accepted. Payment is handled only when a deal closes: the buyer pays a finder's fee, and your advisory fee is owed only when the deal closes and is agreed in writing first. There is no upfront cost.

Legal safeguards you must check

Every dataset must satisfy three legal checks. You must own the data or have a clear right to license it, your customer contracts must allow de-identified use by a third party, and personally identifiable information must be removable under law and your own policies. Our team works with your counsel to confirm that each condition is satisfied before any license is signed.

Rights, exclusivity, and future refreshes

The license you grant is usually exclusive for a finite period, often 24 months. After that, the buyer may continue to use the trained model but not the raw data. Perpetual use rights are common because a model cannot reproduce the underlying files. If you prefer a shorter exclusive window, the price can be lowered. You keep ownership of the data and can continue to use it internally. A later refresh of the dataset for a new buyer is possible and is treated as a separate license.

Extending the offer to workflow licensing

In addition to raw records, you can license documented workflows: how your team gets work done, recorded task runs, or AI-assisted processes. These are priced per organizational workflow and, if you wish, by department. The capture method is agreed case by case, and nothing is captured until you accept a quote. Offering workflow licensing can raise the deal value because it gives buyers a ready-made reinforcement-learning environment.

What you can do next

If you meet the employee threshold and have operational data that fits the categories above, the next step is to see whether you qualify. Use the button below to start the fit-check on our site. The questionnaire takes only a few minutes and does not require you to upload any files.

Questions people ask

Is data licensing a substitute for selling my company?

A data license adds cash flow without giving up equity or control. It complements, rather than replaces, a full sale.

What if my company has sensitive customer data?

The de-identification process strips all personally identifiable information and any content you mark confidential. You also review a sample before any data is handed over.

How long does the whole licensing deal take?

The timeline depends on data complexity, the number of interested buyers, and the legal review required.

Can I negotiate the exclusive period?

Yes. Buyers usually ask for 24 months, but a shorter exclusive term is possible and will affect the price.
