Sell your data

How do you get paid when you license company data to an AI lab?

Owners ask the same few questions about money: who pays, when, and what happens if the AI lab does not accept the data. The answers depend on the deal, so this page describes the common shapes, not a fixed rule. It does not quote amounts, because an amount follows a sample and a written offer.

What is my data worth?

Who pays whom

The AI lab that licenses the data pays the seller under the license. The seller does not pay our broker fee: the AI lab pays it, only after the deal closes. If no deal closes, there is no broker fee.

Who pays for de-identification is agreed case by case. In many deals the AI lab covers it, and some sellers have it done first so the data is ready to use.

Common ways a payment is structured

Which fits depends on how soon the seller needs the money and how long the data will keep changing.

StructureHow it works
One paymentPaid after the AI lab accepts the data. Simple, and it puts all the waiting on the seller.
In two partsPart when the agreement is signed and part after delivery or acceptance. It shares the risk between the sides.
Over timePayments across a period, sometimes for new data as it is produced. It can add up to more and takes longer.
A mixA payment at signing plus later payments tied to delivery steps or refreshes.

The acceptance window

After delivery the AI lab usually has a written window to review the data and accept or reject it against agreed checks. The license states the length of the window and the payment date, so there is no guesswork about when the money is due.

Escrow and other safeguards

In some deals the AI lab places the payment with a neutral third party, called escrow, which releases it when stated conditions are met. It protects the seller from nonpayment and the AI lab from paying for data that does not arrive. Whether it is used depends on the size of the deal and the sides, and it is set in the contract.

Exclusive terms change the price

An exclusive AI lab agreement, where one lab has the data to itself for a fixed term, is priced higher than a non-exclusive one. It is for a term and usually does not end the seller’s own use. See how exclusive and non-exclusive licenses compare.

Paperwork to expect

The AI lab will usually ask for a tax form from the seller before paying: a W-9 in the United States, or a W-8BEN or W-8BEN-E for sellers outside it. Counsel and your accountant confirm what applies to you.

Questions about how do you get paid when you license company data to an AI lab?

Do I pay anything to start?

You do not pay our broker fee. The AI lab pays it, and only after a deal closes. De-identification is a separate matter, agreed case by case.

What is the amount?

It depends on the data, how much there is, how complete it is and the AI lab, and it is set in a written offer after a sample. We do not quote one up front.

What if the AI lab rejects the data after delivery?

The license sets the checks and the window. If the data does not meet them, the contract says what happens, which is why the checks are agreed before delivery.

Can I be paid in advance?

Some deals include a payment at signing, and an owner who needs speed can ask for that structure. Whether the AI lab agrees is part of the negotiation.

Is the money taxed?

Licensing income is usually taxable. Your accountant tells you how it is treated where you are, and the tax form the AI lab asks for supports that.
