Can a pharmaceutical company license its data to AI companies?
Parts of it, and with a long list of exclusions. A drug company’s most valuable data, compounds, trial results and patient records, is protected by patents, trade secrets and privacy law, and is not what is described here. What can sometimes be considered is the operations record around the science: procedures, quality systems and how teams coordinate.
What a pharmaceutical company has that is licensable
| Standard operating procedures | Written methods for production steps, cleaning, calibration and record keeping, with their revision histories. |
| Quality deviation and corrective action records | What went wrong in a process, how it was investigated and what was changed, with product and person details removed. |
| Project coordination records | Planning documents and team chat about timelines, supplier problems and handoffs between groups. |
| Training materials | How staff are taught a method, including assessments and the common mistakes covered. |
| Technical support exchanges | Questions between sites about equipment and methods, and the answers. |
Where the confidential science sits
Compound structures, formulations, assay results and regulatory filings are trade secrets or are covered by patents, and companies guard them closely. The approach starts by excluding anything that describes a product under development, and then looks at what remains.
Quality systems are unusually well documented
Regulated production requires written procedures, controlled revisions and documented investigations of every deviation. That discipline produces records with a clear structure and a stated reason for each change, which is not common in other industries.
Patients and trial participants are protected
Records about people in trials or treatment, including adverse event reports, carry consent terms and strict privacy rules. They are out of scope. Where a document mentions such a person, the whole document is reviewed or dropped.
What stays out for a pharmaceutical company
| Trial and patient data | Participant records, adverse event reports and clinical results stay out of every set. |
| Formulations and compound data | Anything that describes what a product is made of, or how its active ingredient works, stays out. |
| Regulatory filings and correspondence | Submissions and agency exchanges are confidential and are screened with counsel. |
| Supplier and partner terms | Contract manufacturers and research partners usually have confidentiality terms that block sharing. |
An example, invented for illustration
A specialty drug manufacturer with 200 employees and a long-running plant selects its cleaning and calibration procedures, its quality deviation write-ups and its training materials for new operators. The quality head removes anything naming a product under development, counsel checks the partner agreements, and the cleaning step replaces staff names and batch numbers. The owner and the quality head approve a sample that shows a deviation from first report to the corrective action.
Questions owners ask about this
Can drug discovery data be licensed?
That is a different and much more sensitive matter, with patents and trade secrets at stake, and it is outside this page. This describes only the operations records around the science.
Are our SOPs confidential?
Often, and many are controlled documents. Leadership decides which can be shared in a de-identified form, and the quality head approves the sample.
Does a contract manufacturer’s data count as ours?
Usually not. Records produced for a client under a production agreement tend to belong to the client, and are left out unless they agree.
Is a small biotech a candidate?
Possibly, if it has consistent operations records over several years. A company with only research notes and no procedures has less to offer in this form.

Records to look at first
- SOPs and knowledge bases: Procedures with their edit history and comments; published help articles add nothing.
- Inspection reports and photos: A finding beside its photos and its fix, with faces, plates and addresses removed first.
- Lab notebooks and experiment records: Settings tied to results, failures included, with sponsor-owned work and patient data kept out.
- Confluence data export: Spaces, page history and restrictions: which Confluence export keeps the reasoning.
