Can a law firm license its data to AI companies?

Lawyers are now using AI every day. And AI still gets the law wrong, a lot.

The missing piece is how real firms actually work. That's what AI companies are paying for, and a law firm can license it, without handing over client files.

So here's a question to keep in mind while you watch. Which of your matters could you replay from your systems? From the first call to the final bill. If there's one, your firm may have something AI companies will pay to license.

  2. In 2024, researchers at Stanford tested the leading AI tools built for legal research. Between seventeen and thirty-three percent of their answers were wrong, or simply made up.

And lawyers use these tools anyway. Nearly seventy percent of legal professionals now use AI at work, up from thirty-one percent a year earlier.

These tools have read the law. What they've never seen is how a lawyer works a matter. That's the gap AI companies are trying to close.

  3. I'm Jimmy. I've worked in data at Fortune 500 companies, as a data analyst, a data engineer and a software engineer, and I'm trained in data science. I'm also a Canadian military veteran, where I specialized in data analysis and reporting.

Selling your data? We get you the best price and keep your data private. Buying data for an AI lab? We find quality data that fits your requirements and see it through to delivery, so your team can focus on advancing AI research.

  4. Let's clear up three myths I hear from lawyers.

Myth one: licensing your data means handing over client files. It doesn't. What AI companies want is your firm's own know-how. Your procedures and checklists, the templates your firm wrote, how a matter moves from intake to the final bill. The client file belongs to the client, and it stays out.

Myth two: confidentiality rules make it impossible. In July 2024 the American Bar Association issued Formal Opinion 512, its first guidance on AI. It says a lawyer's duty of confidentiality still applies whenever AI is involved, and a line of boilerplate in an engagement letter isn't consent. So the rules don't forbid this. They draw the line: client confidences stay out, and your own counsel signs off on what goes in.

Myth three: only big firms have anything worth buying. A firm of about thirty people with a few years of closed matters already holds thousands of real decisions.

  5. How much is legal judgment worth to an AI company? Here's one way to see it.

Right now, AI training platforms advertise around sixty to a hundred and fifty dollars an hour for lawyers to write and grade the answers AI gives. One lawyer, one answer at a time.

Now think about your firm. Every closed matter holds hundreds of real decisions, already made, by people who knew what they were doing. That's why a firm's records are worth licensing.

  6. Here's what cleaning a record looks like. This is a note a partner might leave on a draft contract. Dana Reyes writes: strike the indemnity cap, Delta Freight lost two million dollars on a deal like this.

After de-identification, Dana is Partner 12. Delta Freight is Client 57. The amount is gone.

What's left is the part an AI can't learn from public law: why an experienced lawyer would strike that clause. That's the value. The client and the people stay out.

How the cleaning is done, and who does it, is written into the contract. And it's a license: your firm keeps its data and keeps using it.

  7. Here's a test you can run in your head. Call it the one-matter test.

Pick one closed matter. Can you trace it in your systems from start to finish? The intake call. The conflict check. The engagement letter. Every draft and the review notes on it. And the final bill.

If you can, your firm has what AI companies want: the whole path of real legal work, not just the end result.

It also helps to have about thirty or more people, three or more years on the same practice software, and records mostly in English.

Your part is mostly exporting the data, and we help with that. Not sure where you stand? The free check at the end tells you.

  8. You run a firm. You don't have time to sell data to AI companies. That's my job.

First, I bring your firm to the AI companies that want legal work, more than one, so they compete for it.

Second, nothing moves until your own counsel is comfortable. The license spells out what's in, what stays out and how it's cleaned. Each deal is also reviewed by third-party counsel and insured by a third-party insurer.

Third, the terms. How long the license runs, how the files are handled, the price. We work that out case by case.

And if no deal closes, you owe me nothing.

  9. So can a law firm license its data? Yes. Not the client's file, but how your firm works: the procedures, templates and judgment calls behind every matter, cleaned before anyone sees them.

Here's what that means for you. If you run a firm with thirty or more people, the matter records and know-how you already have could become a new revenue stream. You license them to AI companies for a fee, and you keep your data. It's extra income from work your team has already done.

Want to know if your firm qualifies, and what it could be worth? Take the free check at AITrainingDataBroker.com/sell. It's a ten-minute form, and you get a straight yes or no. It costs nothing, and you don't sign anything.
