One-time vs. renewable license for company data

Understand whether a data deal is a single-payment perpetual license or a recurring agreement, and see if your company fits.

A one-time license is the standard way we sell company data to AI labs, and it gives the buyer a perpetual right-to-use the data set. A renewable license is possible but rare, it runs for a set term (often two years) and the fee is spread over that period.

What a one-time license looks like

When you sign a one-time license, you keep ownership of your data. The lab receives a right-to-use grant that never expires because a trained model cannot reproduce the raw records. You receive a single lump-sum payment, and the contract may let you update the data later for an additional fee if you generate new records.

The appeal is simplicity. After we sign, the data is exported, de-identified, and the buyer can start training models right away. Your internal systems keep running unchanged, and you can license the same data to other labs as long as you honor any exclusivity period we negotiate.

When a renewable license makes sense

A renewable license works well in a few situations:

  • Your business creates fresh operational data every month and you want the buyer to stay current without a new contract each time.
  • The buyer prefers a lower upfront cost and is comfortable paying a recurring fee for a defined term, typically 24 months.

These deals price each term separately. The buyer must renew before the period ends to keep access. If the term lapses without renewal, the buyer must stop using the data, and any models built from it need to be retrained on new data you supply.

How the licensing model affects price

Price depends on how much data you generate, the type of data, and how long you have been collecting it on the same tools. A rare industry or a clean rights history can push the price higher. Most deals fall between $100,000 and $2 million USD. A one-time license usually lands near the middle of that range, while a renewable deal breaks the total into smaller yearly payments.

Checking if your company is a fit

We look for at least 30 full-time employees. There is no upper limit; larger firms simply have more data to offer. Our free eligibility check on the sell page asks a few basic questions about workforce size, the kinds of operational data you keep, and whether you have continuous history on the same tools. You can complete the check without sending any data. Once you submit, we create a one-page summary and share it with several large AI labs. The best quote and the conditions that match your preferences come back to you for review.

The role of de-identification

Before any data leaves your environment, we strip personally identifiable information (PII) and any confidential markings. Names become stable placeholders such as "employee 632," and dates or locations may be truncated to meet privacy regulations. If you want to see how your data measures up, our separate de-identification service can run a test. That service is billed separately, regardless of whether you eventually license the data.

A quick self-assessment

Ask yourself these two questions:

  1. Do you keep support tickets that show the problem, the steps taken, and the resolution?
  2. Do you have a CRM or sales-activity log that records the chain from request to closed-won?

If you answered yes to both, you likely have the kind of company data (also called business records) that AI labs value.

Questions people ask

What happens to my data after the deal closes?

The data is exported to a secure workspace, de-identified, and the raw copies are deleted on a recorded date. You receive a copy of the cleaned data and a provenance memo that shows how the buyer will use it.

Can I sell the same data to more than one lab?

Yes, as long as you do not grant exclusive rights for the entire term. Most buyers ask for exclusivity for 24 months, after which you can negotiate with other labs.

Do I need legal counsel for every deal?

Every license goes through a legal review to confirm you own the data, your customer contracts allow de-identified use, and the buyer's rights are clearly defined.

How long does a renewable license last?

The term is negotiated case by case, but a common length is two years. Shorter terms are possible at a lower price, while longer terms may require a higher fee.
